What to Do If You Lock Your Keys in the Car

Locking your keys in the car is never a pleasant experience, but it happens to most people at some point in their lives. Follow this guide to help you assess what to do if you lock your keys in the car.

Are You with Anyone?

If you are with a child or pet, you will need to think about their safety before you do anything else, especially if it is a hot day. Cars are basically just metal boxes, and they get hot very quickly in the sun. Therefore, it is imperative that you get into your car to get them out. You can do this by smashing a side window with anything that comes to hand. You will often find rocks or other hard objects lying by the side of the road.

Break the side window as these are not built to withstand as much pressure as a windscreen so will break more easily. Once you have done this, you can get the child or pet out. Hopefully, you will also be able to get to your keys. Taking care to avoid the broken glass, you can then drive home and call a glass repair company.

Are You Safe?

Consider whether you are safe where you are. If you are stranded in a remote area or an area that you don’t feel safe in, call 911. Tell them where you are and why you feel vulnerable, and they should get to you quickly. They may even be able to get into your car and give you the keys back.

Do You Have a Spare Key?

If you have a spare key or you have given one to a friend or family member, then you could call someone and get them to bring the spare key to you. This may sound obvious, but if you are stranded and panicking, you might not be thinking straight.

Look at Your Surroundings

Take a look around and see where you are. If you have passed a garage or a retail park, you might be able to find the tools you need to get into your car yourself. Ask for advice on the best way to get into your car if you need to. This will usually be the easiest way that will cost you the least to repair once you get home.

Call a Locksmith

Call a locksmith such as Smart Bolt Locksmith. They are experienced in all types of locked door entry, and they will be able to get into your car quickly and easily. They will charge you a fee for this, but it is worth checking to see if your car insurance company will cover the cost.

If you lock your keys in the car, try not to panic. Follow this guide and you will get out of the situation quickly and safely. You may even look back on this experience and laugh at yourself, although this may take a while.
