Can You Spray Paint Plastic?

Can you spray paint plastic

Can you spray paint plastic? Spray painting plastic used to be a chore some time ago. This was because when paint was applied to a glossy plastic surface, it did not cover it smoothly. Instead, spray painting plastic resulted in surfaces full of droplets, blobs, and beads.

But that was before, spray painting plastic has become much easier now and gives great result, if you are careful. Follow the steps mentioned here and you will find spray painting plastic a much easier task:

Clean

Before you start spray painting plastic, ensure that that the surface is clean. You do that by removing any debris, dust, and grime that the plastic might be sporting. Some plastics might be difficult to clean and wiping them down, doesn’t really work. If that happens, you can simply hose it down with water, then wipe it, and let it dry before spray painting plastic.

Sand

The next step in spray painting plastic involves sanding the surface so that it has a dull finish but is also smooth. A dull finish would mean that the paint would stick more easily due to the texture of the plastic. Once you are done sanding, dust with a dry brush to get rid of any debris that is left behind. After that, wipe with a wet cloth and allow it to dry off.

Spray

This is the final part in spray painting plastic. When spraying, don’t keep the nozzle of the spray bottle too close to the object that you are painting. Doing so will mean that the paint will be applied unevenly. Keep a distance (about 4-6 inches away from the surface), so that the paint doesn’t get thicker in some places and running off in others. As you continue to paint, keep in mind that you are following the same technique. Even as you start a new layer, keep the technique constant.

Design

You can form a color-block design when spray painting plastic, if you want. In order to that, draw the design of your liking by applying tape to the object you are spraying. The parts that you don’t want to spray should be covered with plastic. Remove it once you are done spraying the first color. Before you apply the second coat, let the first one dry completely.

Tips:

  • If you want to save some time, you can also use a liquid sander, instead of the paper kind. The liquid will both clean the surface while also sanding it.
  • For best results, always choose a paint brand that has been specifically designed to adhere to plastics.
  • If the specific formula isn’t available, then prime the object with a specially formulated primer. Then apply the ordinary kind of spray paint.

Remember that you will have to work very patiently when you are spray-painting plastic. If you can do that and follow the steps mentioned above, then you have much higher chances of success. Go ahead and try these tips on some old lawn furniture to see if they work!
